Ethanol will give a positive test with the iodoform reagent.
Add a solution of iodine in alkaline condition (NaOH) to ethanol. Heat it and a yellow precipitate of iodoform will form.
methanol has no reaction with iodoform reagent.
Conditions of positive iodoform test:
The carbon atom must attach to i) CH3....ii) OH.......iii) H
